[ the communications network had gone down first. then visibility. then about half of the damn collective mission team when the wind whipped enough sand loose to have the ground cracking and giving way and dropping them into a cave system, a river snaking through the centre of it.

since her headcount, carolina's been repeatedly trying comms with someone within visual distance of her and once that finally goes through, she's trying for the missing team lead a minute later. ]

Lee, this is Carolina. Do you copy?

[ He knew things couldn't possibly be easy. Why would they? That would make some kind of sense. So, he wasn't surprised when things went to shit. Annoyed about it, sure. Even more when they lost visual and comms to the other half of their teams.

Eventually, things get a little better. A minor improvement in the shitstorm that is this mission. Comms seem to be back up and Lee's waiting for an opportunity to contact when Carolina beats him to it. ]

Yeah, yeah. I'm here. Where the frak are you??

[ It's not accusatory. In fact he sounds relieved. ]

Sightseeing. [ sarcasm is good for covering relief, here. her and the others she has with her can finish this on their own if they have to, but if the beta team lead is still alive, that's optimistic. ]

Some ground gave way just after we lost comms, dropped us into a cave system, but we're still headed for the objective or the surface, whatever comes first. What's your headcount?

[ He does huff a little bit of a laugh, because. Well. Laughter helps, or something. But, then he's all serious and focused after that. They're lucky. All of them. Since Carolina doesn't say anyone was lost, Lee is assuming all are counted for. But still, ]

Five. The rest are with you, I hope.

[ If not, they've got a bigger problem on their hands. ]

[ and probably well enough to keep moving without issue, if he's not immediately reporting anything serious. she'll take it. her old team aside, she's not really attached to these people so much as losing them would look poorly for her, the one tasked simply with getting them from one point to another. they need to keep moving, thanks. ]

We're a little over forty miles out, south of our projected heading but still en route. How are you moving?

[ He doesn't respond for a short while, the comm dropping silent. When he eventually returns, he's breathing heavier and there's a thread of annoyance pulling tighter in his tone. ]

We're nearly there; we have visuals on the wall. It's heavily guarded out here. They're smarter and have some form of cloaking.

[ if they're within sight of the wall already, carolina's group has fallen further behind schedule than she thought. and damn, does she ever hate that, gritting her teeth to keep from swearing over it in favour of useful words instead. ]

Just do what recon you can until we get there, especially on that camouflage. If you can use an EMP to short them out, that'll give you an advantage they're not anticipating.

[ Hey, it's not her fault. It's this shitty ass planet. Still, he does laugh a little, the sound not entirely mirthful at all... ]

Right. An EMP. Something useful. [ Because where are useful things on this mission???? ] Sorry, are you on another mission I wasn't aware of that is better supplied than this one?

Check Wash and Maine's armour. One of them might be useful.

[ agent "forgot to take note of what armour enhancements her team started the mission with" carolina, tbh. ]

[ That's not something he ever imagined he'd have to ask about. ]

And be sure to tell them they're disappointments if neither of them have it for me, alright? [ that's a particularly dry comment from her, probably permission to take it as sarcastic and not pass that on. but if he wants to tell her friends that they're let-downs that's okay too!! ]

[ And he definitely will do that. ]

Everyone's been told to stay low. The team is too small right now and we're out-numbered. [ He pauses for a moment, clears his throat then sighs. ] Not that we still won't be out-numbered when you get here, but you know what I mean.

Yeah, I get it. And it'll be fine once the full team's there.

[ congrats, you received her single optimistic statement for the day. ]

Just stockpile intel for us so we don't have to wait when we arrive.

Trust me, as soon as you're here, we're going to hit this hard so we can get out.

[ He pauses, there's some shuffling noises and his tone drops lower. ]

When you see the wall—because you're going to see it from a distance—steer clear of the east side. That's all I can give you right now. Come up on the west, there's more cover.

[ since that was her job, right? and she'd hate someone dying on his watch making her look bad. ]
